Special Programs

BES Initiatives
At BES, we strive to provide instruction that aligns with our mission and beliefs. Currently, we have four initiatives that are used to guide our instruction.
Alabama Reading Initative (ARI)
The Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) is a statewide K-12 initiative managed by the Department of Education. The goal of ARI is to significantly improve reading instruction and ultimately achieve 100% literacy among public school students. Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI)
The Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative is the Alabama Department of Education’s initiative to improve math and science teaching statewide. Its mission is to provide all students in Grades K-12 with the knowledge and skills needed for success in the workforce and/or postsecondary studies (college and career ready).
21st Century Learning Center (CAST)
This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
Girls Engaged in Math and Science University (GEMS-U) is an educational program designed to actively involve girls in STEM related activities through formal and informal learning environments. The GEMS-U Program supports the national need to close the STEM gender gap utilizing eight teaching strategies to encourage self-confidence and elevate interest in the areas of math and science with female students. GEMS-U teacher practices focus on these strategies to strengthen girls’ beliefs regarding their abilities in math and science.
